We are delighted to announce that Mr Joe Silvester has been appointed by the Governors to be the next Headmaster of St Albans School, succeeding Mr Jonathan Gillespie who is retiring in August 2024 after a highly successful tenure as Headmaster.

Joe is currently the Headmaster of Wetherby Senior School, an academic boys’ school in central London, having previously served as the Deputy Head (Academic) at Bancroft’s School in Woodford Green, and as an Assistant Head at City of London School. Joe has experience as a governor and has worked in both maintained and independent schools. He will be taking up the post from September 2024, moving to St Albans with his wife Rachael and their two young children.

Mr Joe Silvester said: “I am honoured and absolutely delighted to have been appointed to be the next Headmaster of St Albans School. I have been fortunate to meet a wide range of staff and governors through the appointment process and I have been struck by their warmth and their dedication to the School and its community. I am looking forward to working closely with Mr Gillespie and other key members of the School over the next two terms to ensure that I am fully prepared for the start of the next academic year.”

Mr Jonathan Gillespie, Headmaster, said: “I congratulate Mr Silvester most warmly on his appointment to be the next Headmaster of this great School and I hope that he will derive as much professional fulfilment and enjoyment from the role as I have done over the last decade. I look forward to liaising with him on a regular basis over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities at the start of the next academic year.”
